Diabetes results in loss of 40,000 limbs every year

While about 40,000 legs are lost as a consequence of diabetes annually in the country, which is home to about 7.1 million diabetics and 400,000 people with foot ulcers, research suggests that cases of amputation of lower limbs are linked to high mortality as renal and cardiovascular functions are also compromised in diabetics, said health experts at a symposium on Tuesday Details

It is a matter of great concern that Type 2 diabetes, once considered to be a disease of middle aged, is now being seen in children and young adolescent. Physical inactivity, and unhealthy eating habits leading to overweight and obesity are the main reasons for this awful situation. Local data shows that 9.8% of children between the age of 8 and 10 years are overweight and 4.3% are obese. Preventing obesity is far easier than treating it. Parent and children health-education and awareness is one of the best ways to prevent obesity in children.

Baqai Institute of Diabetology & Endocrinology has again been privileged of being First institution with the installation of Pedograph. Pedograph is mainly used in prevention of complications of Diabetic Foot. High pressure areas on each foot are identified and offloaded to avoid ulcer formation.
